‘While You Were Sleeping’ was the second album from singer-songwriter Holly
Lerski’s folk-orientated UK
indie pop outfit Angelou. Brought
up from the wilds of
East Anglia
by songwriter Boo Hewerdine's label Haven Records, Angelou quickly rose to
critical attention in 1998 with the release of their debut album 'Automiracles'.
Their second self-produced album ‘While
You Were Sleeping
was released to further widespread acclaim in 2000, and
evidenced a new found maturity in Lerski's songwriting finishing with a moving
tribute to the Jeff Buckley, "Little Sister".
UK
and Spanish tours followed, as did national press, radio and television
appearance, culminating in Holly's contribution to the Jeff Buckley US
documentary ‘Amazing Grace’.
"Quietly brilliant
folk-rock. Angelou's singer-songwriter, has a gorgeous voice not
unlike Tracey Thorn's, and her band frame the songs with a sympathetic
dexterity, but this is not music destined for world domination.
However, for those willing to upturn a stone or two
there are treasures here. This album is a real find.
